Social Media for Old, I mean Mature People

As I have started down this road of self promotion. Which as you know because the only ones reading this know me, I don’t really like. It occurs to me that my online social profile screams, old. I mean I troll Facebook sometimes if I’m feeling really adventurous I go on Snapchat. I actually still rely on the news for news, not Twitter and when I looked at how many people were following me on Twitter, it said 3. Yep that’s not a typo, 3 people.

I recognize that the only way to build a community of people who are interested in what I’m writing and will potentially be excited for the books I’m putting out is to get myself out there. I struggle though with how to do it and where to put things.

In College I interned under an amazing woman, Kaine Thompson. She is now retired and is a published author. She taught me how to write a press release and how to make it interesting. The problem is that while I still go back to those lessons in my head I don’t know how relevant they are in todays world. My book is technically categorized as young adult. I still love reading YA books and many friends I have do as well. I think though I will need some actual YA people.

So my question is this, if you needed to build a community of people and you wanted at least a few of them to be younger than you and your friends how would you go about it? Don’t be shy, I really do need the help here. I will do whatever is suggested, within reason you crazy people!

  1. Teaching high schoolers, I can tell you that they spend most of their time on SnapChat. Even Twitter is passe and for “old people.” They also watch a lot of Youtube. I think it’s difficult to reach a large audience unless you, by some miracle, start trending. I’ll check with my juniors/seniors today to see if they have any suggestions!

  2. I think word of mouth is the best way. People tell their friends when they’ve read a book they like and mothers share books with their daughters. If I really like a book, I recommend it to anyone I know who likes to read. 🙂
