NaNoWriMo …
Stands for National Novel Writing Month, November. This year I’m going to be participating. The goal is to write 50,000 words in the month. October has become Preptober and I am trying desperately to turn my normal “pantsing it” type of writing into some version of an outline.
So far I’ve had at least three identity crisis and forgotten my main characters name but its fine, it should be fine.
I have however a solid I think 35,000 usable words currently written, there’s another 10,000 hanging out there but they scream cutting room floor. This week I am focusing on editing the good words and flowing my timelines together, weaving and ducking basically so there is a semblance of a coherent story. Last novel I left all that to the end and the problem I found was I missed things because after a hundred words or so I didn’t necessarily remember the intricate details of what day we were on or whether or not I had already described in stunning detail the tree from before.
If I can get current third into good shape and then use Preptober to do the outline and write the next 15,000 words that will leave November to basically write the scenes that I outline. The only concern for me is that the last week in November is Thanksgiving which means, I have about 25 days to write 50,000 words which is 2,000 words a day. That’s about 4 – 5 thousand more words than I’m currently averaging a week.
It’s fine, it should be fine.
I’ve also been told of the NaNoWriMo hangover which I will not have time for because if I want to get this thing to my editor in December there will be no rest for the weary. Hmmm ….
Anyway, that’s the post for the week, sorry its not more insightful. Come see me in Gardner, MA next week! Details on my front page!
